Phyllis Burchett

Phyllis Burchett’s lifelong connection to horses has shaped both her career and creative voice. She began in the equine industry as a successful horse trainer, earning numerous World and National Championships, primarily in Appaloosa competition, and coaching amateur and youth riders to multiple titles. She later transitioned into managing a large breeding facility, providing stallion and mare services across several breeds.

After stepping away from the horse industry, Phyllis combined her love of travel and art to pursue photography. Although she initially explored landscape and wildlife, horses ultimately called her back. Today, her work focuses on telling the story of the horse, both wild and domestic, drawing on decades of experience. Though she has photographed horses around the world, her favorite subjects remain both America’s wild horses and the working ranch horse.

Phyllis now guides and educates other photographers through workshops and photo tours across the U.S. and internationally. Her Iceland Equine Photo Tour is consistently in high demand, maintaining a waiting list several years out.

In 2018, she co-founded Cowgirls with Cameras, a collective of Western adventure photographers focused on the Western lifestyle and equine photography. Through their online community, podcast, and in-person events, they help photographers develop both their craft and confidence.

Phyllis’s work has been published in Western Horseman, Quarter Horse Journal, and Cowboys & Indians, among others. She is a signature member of the Cowgirl Artists of America, a member of Professional Photographers of America and the Equine Photographers Network, and has received numerous honors, including being named a 2024 Western Horseman Best of the West Photographer and a Western Life & Style 30 Over 30 Honoree. World Art Group, Inc. and Arcangel Images represent her.
